I’m sure you guys have seen this dress all over the internet with Actress Naturi Naughton (Power) wearing it on the red carpet at the BET Awards. She looked like a breathe of fresh air and you can tell that she really enjoyed wearing it too. You have to love what you are wearing because your body language will show! I was chatting with a friend of mine who knows a little bit about the designer who made Naturi’s dress and I have some words of wisdom for you guys that may have dreams of becoming a fashion designer….
TWT TEA: So I was chatting with my friend who lives in New Jersey and owns a fashion boutique there. She had recently reached out to the designer (who just graduated from high school and made that iconic prom dress) by the name of Kyemah McEntyre. She was very excited to talk with her about working together and possibly putting some of her designs in her boutique to help sell. The conversation kinda went sour because I think that this young lady was overwhelmed with her instant fame.
That’s the power of the internet where so many random people will see what you do and come at you, now that you have become somewhat of an overnight success! The girl was nervous, hesitant, not sure of herself, overwhelmed and not quite sure what she wanted to do with her brand. I don’t blame her though because she is right out of high school but I always tell people, BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!
People from all over the world, wanted their product to appear on Oprah’s Favorite Things and what happened to a lot of them? They went bankrupt because they could not keep up with demand and went out of business! I don’t know if a lot of you are aware of that. So this seems to be what is happening to this young fashion designer but with prayers, guidance, a good team, work ethic, I think she will be fine.
She will just have to learn how to be an adult really fast, become professional and get great people behind her that won’t take advantage of her. I just mentioned to you guys the disaster that happened to me while trying to work with fashion designers(click here) and if she can’t crank out those garments in a decent turnaround time, she will sink fast and her reputation will be ruined! I hope she proceeds with caution. Good luck to Kyemah though but this gown was definitely a show stopper on the red carpet! xoxo
