Today, talk show host Sherri Shepherd sat down with Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York and discussed what life was like for her and Princess Diana under the glare of the media. And she compares it to what the new generation of royals, including her daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, have to endure because of social media and cyberbullying.
Sherri: Duchess, you’ve been affiliated with the Royal Family for years, and you’ve been part of them. They have been so scrutinized for so long … even Prince Harry wrote a book about this … being part of the royals and his mental health … do you think it gets harder for each generation?
Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York: It was really bad for Diana and I. Really bad. It was all in print. And there was no social media. So you didn’t have the right to reply. So now, it doesn’t get any worse. It’s still just as bad, but now you could reply. But then you have cyberbullying. They just sit there and say, “Oh yeah, she’s fat today. Oh yeah, she’s reheaded and ugly today.”
Sherri: Do you ever feel like answering them back? And say no, that’s not true? That’s not right.
Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York: Then they start saying, well you said that about that, why are you not answering that?
