Rockettes Perform ‘Christmas Lights’ on TODAY And A Look Back At Hiring Their First African American Dancer

The Radio City Rockettes shared some of the classic numbers they are most excited for in the return of their show this year and performed “Christmas Lights” on the TODAY plaza as part of the Citi Concert Series.

The Radio City Rockettes made history in 1987 by hiring the first African American dancer, Tracy Wilson. She joined the famed dance troupe during the Christmas Spectacular, which was a groundbreaking moment for the iconic company that had been in operation since 1932. Wilson’s addition was a significant step towards greater diversity and inclusion in one of the most recognized and prestigious dance ensembles in the world.

Before her, the Rockettes had exclusively been made up of white dancers, a practice that was in line with the times but was eventually challenged as society and expectations in the arts evolved. Tracy Wilson’s hiring helped open doors for more inclusivity in the performing arts, particularly for Black dancers at such prominent venues. See more inside…
