Red Carpet Rundown: Netflix ‘Shirley’ Advance Screening At BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music)

This week, Academy Award winner Regina King was joined by Oscar-winning director-screenwriter John Ridley and cast members Christina Jackson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Reina King in Washington, D.C. and Brooklyn, NY for two advance screenings of SHIRLEY. The film tells the story of the first Black congresswoman and political icon, Shirley Chisholm, and her trailblazing run for president of the U.S in 1972.

The screenings were held at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the nation’s capital and at Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn where Chisholm was born and raised. The cast and director participated in meaningful post-screening Q&A discussions championing the impactful legacy of Chisholm and the experience of making the film, which culminates a 15-year journey for sisters and producers, Regina and Reina King.

In Washington, D.C., the cast was also welcomed to the Library of Congress by Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Steven Horsford, and Congresswoman Barbara Lee to view the Shirley Chisholm collection from the Library’s archives.
