What do you get when you mix a bougee and stubborn woman and an up-and-coming gifted chef that is undeniably talented? That’s what you will see in the upcoming movie, The Hundred-Foot Journey! It’s a great tale based on a best-selling novel and if you are a foodie like me, you will absolutely love this movie! The Kadam family clashes with Madame Mallory, proprietress of a celebrated French restaurant, after they open their own nearby eatery, until undeniable chemistry causes the Madame to take gifted young chef Hassan under her wing. Come inside to read my review on this magnificent film that hits theaters tomorrow!
Helen Mirren plays Madame Mallory. This is one stubborn woman who thinks her ol’ school and proper ways of cooking is the only way. It’s her way or no way at all! She absolutely has no time to entertain new ways of cooking and especially from a young chef Hassan who’s of another race and decent. She eventually comes around after finally tasting his delicious creations and seasonings.
Manish Dayal plays Hassan. Following in his father’s footsteps, he wants to try his hand at cooking as well. He has a heart of gold, eager to learn and just wants other people to try his food. I liked him a lot and he throws down in the kitchen for sure!
Charlotte Le Bon plays a young and beautiful sous chef, who’s a bit shy but willing to teach others her master culinary skills after working under Madame Mallory.
Om Puri plays Papa and my favorite character in the movie! He’s funny, charming, short-tempered, stubborn, funny as hell but he can cook! He brings his Indian dishes to France and eagerly opens up a restaurant with competition right across the street and finds out early on that it’s not as easy he expected!
Pinky Review: At first, I didn’t think that I was going to like this film at all. Although I do love food, blog about different restaurants etc, I just was not interested in this. Even if Oprah Winfrey and Steven Speilberg name was attached to it lol. Once I sat in my seat and started watching the film, I was very intrigued indeed! I also dream of visiting France(where this movie takes place) so yeah I was all in! It’s heart warming and full of diversity which I REALLY appreciated! So many times, people act like they want to come together and learn about different cultures but really do they? This movie tries to break down those barriers with the storyline and how one woman didn’t want to change but she was kinda forced to. It was interesting to see how the writers mixed two different cultures(Indian & French) who had totally different ways of cooking and colliding them together with food! It’s a good movie and makes you think. You will get the point of the movie, which is to try not to be so judgmental towards others and instead embrace each others differences. Job well done and I give it a B+.

About THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY
In “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant—the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren), gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own escalate to all out war between the two establishments—until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Mme. Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Mme. Mallory cannot ignore. At first Mme. Mallory’s culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan’s gift as a chef and takes him under her wing.
“The Hundred-Foot Journey” abounds with flavors that burst across the tongue. A stimulating triumph over exile, blossoming with passion and heart, with marjoram and madras, it is a portrayal of two worlds colliding and one boy’s drive to find the comfort of home, in every pot, wherever he may be.
Directed by Lasse Hallström, and starring Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren, “The Hundred-Foot Journey” is produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Juliet Blake. The executive producers are Caroline Hewitt and Carla Gardini. The screenplay is written by Steven Knight, based on the novel “The Hundred-Foot Journey” by Richard C. Morais.
