I met fashion blogger Claire Sulmers during New York Fashion Week a few seasons ago. I must say that this beauty stood out in the crowd. I went over and introduced myself to her and told her that I love her blog Fashion Bomb Daily! After a few times of seeing her out and about, we have become pretty chummy! Fun fact… I found out that Claire is actually from Atlanta where I live, so when she comes in town we get a chance to hang out! I asked her if she would be so kind to answer a few questions for me and she happily obliged! We talked fashion style mavens, African Americans in fashion blogging and so much more! You wear some amazing looks. Who are some of your favorite designers and why?
I love London based designers like Mary Katrantzou and Peter Pilotto for their prints. I’m truly a prep at heart, and I’ve had a thing for Milly skirts and separates for the past few months. I also love up and comers like Kimberly Goldson for their impeccable tailoring. For kicking it day to day, you’ll see me in Helmut Lang and Rag & Bone Jeans.
What kind of person reads Fashion Bomb Daily and why did you choose to start a blog?
I think Fashion Bomb readers are style enthusiasts. Young women and men aged 18-34 who want to know what’s hot in pop culture and what their favorite stars are wearing every day (and where they can get it!). I decided to start the blog because I love shopping and writing, and it seemed like the perfect way to marry two of my biggest passions.
Tell us the challenges you face as an African American Fashion Blogger?
African American fashion bloggers are simply treated as second class citizens, if we’re acknowledged at all. Invitations to exclusive fashion events are not extended. The focus is always on a handful of Asian and Caucasion bloggers. It’s always a humbling experience, especially during fashion week! But I have to realize that I am very blessed to have a loyal readership, and that blogging has allowed me to live my dreams.
If you could partner with any fashion or beauty brand, who would it be and what would you like to accomplish?
I’d love to work with ASOS, perhaps on a capsule or curated collection. My readers LOVE ASOS, so I think it would be a great partnership. I’d just like to have a broader reach and perhaps touch a wider audience.
Give me a list of your top 5 favorite celebrity style mavens? Who kills it every time?
I love Rihanna, though she’s hit or miss. I always really enjoy Victoria Beckham, Nicole Richie, Solange Knowles, and Kim Kardashian. I think Nicole Richie dresses really well–she kills it every time!
