Monica Receives Honor at Atlanta’s Black Excellence Brunch

On Sunday, Black Lives Matter and Black Girls Rock! collaborated to host a Black Excellence Brunch in Atlanta, Georgia, alongside Trell Thomas, the event’s founder. The brunch celebrated the groundbreaking achievements of Black women across various industries. Several remarkable individuals were honored, including Beverly Bond, founder of Black Girls Rock!, Towanda Braxton, Monica, and others.

At the brunch, Monica took the stage for a fireside chat with Thomas, openly discussing her relationship with producer and manager Anthony Wilson, among other topics. The “So Gone” singer shared how her childhood experiences equipped her for her relationship with Wilson.

She continued, “Nothing happens for nothing. Because, here I am, blended family, co-parenting with Anthony and enjoying life and just having somebody that’s there for me…but who knew what my childhood was, was preparing me for what my life would be.”

In the conversation, Monica addressed the term “auntie,” which has become popular on social media. She shared that she has no issue with the label, seeing it as a term of endearment that conveys respect.

“When I hear ‘hey auntie, what’s up,’ I know I’m in Atlanta,” she noted. “It indicates a connection to me. To me, being called auntie is not negative; it reflects respect. You’re never happier than when you refer to your auntie.”

Monica further stated, “I don’t view it negatively. It signifies that you understand me and see me for who I am.”

The conversation concluded with Monica expressing her appreciation for Anthony, acknowledging him as a supportive partner after years of friendship.

“We were friends for 14 years first,” she revealed. “During that time, we collaborated and worked together, but he always made a point to check on me. That’s something people rarely do unless they want something in return. The problem is that we often give up too quickly. If I judged love based on my past experiences, I would have thought he couldn’t be in my life. But I don’t blame him for what others did before. Everything that happened served as a lesson for me.”
