On the Tuesday, May 21 edition of “Tamron Hall,” Tamron opened the show debuting her all-new summer look! Then, Gayle King sat down with Tamron to talk about her viral Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover. King also opened up about her dating experiences and what she’s looking for in a partner. Earlier in the show, Grammy® award winner and co-founder of a cappella group Pentatonix, Scott Hoying and his husband, Mark Hoying, spoke with Tamron about their love story that served as the main influence for their debut children’s book, “How Lucky Am I?” Plus, the couple performed their new song inspired by their book for the first time. Gayle King on her viral Sports Illustrated cover and behind-the-scenes details from the shoot:
“The editor-in-chief, she’s a badass woman, MJ Day called me…So when she called me, I honestly thought it was a joke. I thought I was being punked. She said, ‘You know, it’s Swimsuit [Sports] Illustrated, the 60th anniversary,’ and I said, ‘And you’re calling me? What would I be doing? What would I be doing?’ And then she said, ‘You know, our brand has evolved.’ You know, in the beginning it was very vavavoom. But now, they have spread to have more diversity. They want women who are ‘crushing it’ – her words – who have been doing what they do, who are successful at what they do, who love what they do…But I did check with my favorite daughter Kirby, my favorite son Will and Oprah… That’s my inner circle.” Gayle continued, “Because, Tamron, they tried to put me in a two piece and I went ‘I ain’t doing that. Nope, nope, nope!” Tamron then asks if there was any diet/exercise prep for the shoot, to which Gayle responds, “But I asked her[MJ Day]. I said, ‘So are you saying I have to lose weight?’ She said, ‘We don’t want you to do anything. Don’t change your diet, we want you to do exactly what you do.’ And I said, ‘A cheeseburger is my favorite meal.’ So the night before [the shoot], I ordered a room service cheeseburger and I’m sitting in the bed, eating the cheeseburger, feeling really good about myself. That’s the beauty though – they said we don’t want you to change anything about yourself…Gayle, we like you the way you are. That’s very freeing for somebody to say that to you!”
Gayle King on her recent dating experiences and what she is looking for:
“This is the thing. If I could go on a dating app and people wouldn’t know it was me, I would do it. But, I think it’s hard when you’re a public person, I do think that’s hard. So you just hope for a friend of a friend. I don’t date married guys or people that have girlfriends. I want somebody who is He or Him.” Tamron steps in to ask, “Would you do younger? How much younger?” Gayle responds, “Definitely younger. But this is the thing, I don’t want to date somebody I could have given birth to.” Gayle adds, “I would like it [a potential suitor’s age] to start with a five and I don’t want to be a nurse or purse. I don’t want that…You know what I mean. I would like it if they have all of their teeth. That would be nice. And I don’t want – I want somebody somebody who – because it’s not really about money guys, it’s about somebody who has their own business, their own thing. They’re very confident in their own skin. You know, I remember once being told, by my ex, ‘I’ll be tired when this Gayle King *bleep* is over.’ So you want somebody who celebrates you, who is excited for you, who is very comfortable in their own skin and that is very difficult. But no pity party for me, I’m really okay. I’m really okay but I would like to meet somebody!” Lastly, Tamron asks “So when was the last hot date?” To which Gayle responds, “I can’t even tell you that.” Tamron continues, “When was the last cold date?” Gayle answers, “I can tell you that. I’m not gonna say. But I always say ‘I’m alert and available.’”
