I’ve never watched an episode of Once Upon A Time, I must have been under a rock or something but this is one of ABC’s top tv shows and I have been slipping lol! While out in Los Angeles, I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with both tv producers from the show, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. They were super cool. It’s always a good idea to learn about new and exciting things and this show was definitely one of them. They chatted with us about their Season 6 premiere plus as a bonus, we got to preview the new season as well, don’t worry no spoilers here! In our interview, they talked about their loyal fans, social media, developing characters, what to expect in the new season and so much more, check it out inside…
What new characters to expect this season?
Adam: We will be seeing Captain Nemo, Count of Monte Cristo, Cinderella, her Evil Stepmom and Stepsisters, Aladdin, Jasmine, Jafar, and some old favorites like Archie/Jiminy Cricket, the Dwarfs, etc. We’ve seen these characters who have been on the show popping back up in the last few seasons going on journeys whether it’s to Neverland or the Underworld. Now that they’re back in Storybrooke, we’re going to dig more into their daily lives and what “normal” is.
Edward: We’re going to meet the Evil Stepmom from Cinderella, we’re going to meet the wicked step sisters, or evil stepsisters. We’re going to see a lot more of Archie, this year, Jiminy Cricket. We’re going to see, Elroy and the Dwarfs, our normal group of people.
On finding Inspiration for the characters?
We find them everywhere. We find them from life or TV shows. Like Walter White saying I like the life, absolutely was amazing. Michael Corleone closing the door when his wife realizes he’s gone to the other side. All these images stick in our mind. For us, Rumple was always part rock star, he was kind of this mixture of Bowie and Mick Jagger and then he’s the Godfather. So you’ve got Mick Jagger if he was a crime boss and that is kind of where we came this from. When we sat down, we always said it’s fairytales through a Bowie video, which is why you see all these little touches. We draw inspiration for the characters everywhere and in real life.
What about characters Belle & Rumple?
Belle is in a place where she’s given up on Rumple, but because they have a child together it makes things a bit more complicated. Of course deep down she still loves him, but she is also very frustrated and disappointed in him, too. And you can’t really blame her. Belle is going to be tested this season, for sure.
What Rumple came to terms with last year was that this is who he is. If Belle wants him to be a better man, then he is. But if she wants him to be a different man, then he can’t. I would agree that in general Rumple is a better man that he was when we first met him 6 years ago, but like he said to Belle earlier he’s not ready to give up his life of deal-making. We will see this unfold more this season!
Reaction to their social media following?
Adam : We love to hear from the fans, we love to get the feedback, and it [social media] is a relatively new phenomena that we get those real time feedback as shows are airing. But what’s hard for a lot of fans to understand, because they don’t make television for a living, is by the time you’re watching the premier we’re already talking about the back half of the season, and how we’re ending the season and all of that. It’s like that ship has sailed, in a way.
Edward : When we go to Comic-Con we see the fans, and they’re dressed up, and they come up to you and they’re like, there’s someone from Brazil and someone one from North Dakota that met in a chat room and now they’re at Comic-Con hanging out, that is really inspiring to us. We love the community, we love the positivity and this was a show about hope. There are moments where a fan will come up to you and literally inspire you and that might find itself into the writing.
