Fashion Designer Zac Posen made his way to Atlanta on Wednesday, May 21st to chat with the faculty and students at SCAD about his journey in the fashion world. I have been a long time fan of his amazing work and I just had to hear what he had to say about the fashion industry, humble beginnings and more! Zac Posen starting making and designing clothing at 16 years old! He moved, worked and studied in London.
He launched his own brand with just $10,000 in savings. He slept on his parent’s couch in Soho, NYC for a long time.
Sean Puffy Combs had a HUGE influence in Zac’s career in the beginning. Puffy liked his work, invested in his company and introduced Zac to Ronald Burkle, which is now Zac’s business partner.
A businessman wanted to own half of Zac’s company and offered him $200,000 and he turned it down. He said when he was young, it sounded like a lot of money at first but he was thinking long term.
Some of his favorite designers in London are Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier.
Zac says he never makes red carpet gowns with anyone in mind.
Zac goes by form, technique, cut, fabric when designing.
As far as American designers, Zac admires Ralph Rucci, Derek Lam, Proenza Schouler
WWD(Women’s Wear Daily) gave Zac a horrible review when he did his first runway show in London. They said the clothes were made poorly, it hurt him deeply.
Zac had a “really” formal breakfast with Anna Wintour. She said to him “America needs you”.
