I’m a fan of rapper Common’s music. He is definitely respected in the music industry with his witty and conscious lyrics that he puts out. I was invited out to a private listening party for Commons upcoming album, The Dreamer, The Believer last night at Jermaine Dupri’s studio in Atlanta. I never been to that studio but it was very nicely decorated. As we pulled up, fly cars were parked out front and all sorts of celebs were making their way inside.

In the party I spotted Keri Hilson, Towanda Braxton, Bu(Akon’s Brother) Neyo and his fiance Monyetta Shaw, J Holiday, Young Jeezy and a host of other record execs and industry people. It was jammed pack and I’m sure it was over capacity but everyone was excited to hear Commons latest project. The man of the hour finally arrived, very hyped up and in a good mood. He thanked everyone for coming out and said, follow him to the studio! We gathered around then he started to talk about his inspiration for the new album. He said, “I’m a hip hop n*gga and there is different sides to me. When you listen to my album, I want you to be motivated and inspired, thats my ultimate goal.” He then started blasting off the new tracks for us to hear.

Here are the songs he played in order:

  • Raw~ about going to a club
  • Sweet~ this song has a newly released video that came out today. Its about hip hop music. The video pays homage to Haiti and thats where it was filmed.
  • Cloth~ two people cut from the same cloth, nice!
  • Celebrate~Very upbeat, sure to get a lot of airplay
  • The Dreamer~deep song about feelings, Maya Angelou featured on track
  • Ghetto Dreams~hard core about him and a girl having dreams of getting out the hood.
  • Gold~headbanger great song
  • Believer~up temple nice song

After we listened to all the songs, he thanked us for coming out. He then did a little freestyle for us and the crowd loved it. The whole cd was produced by No I.D. and my favs were Cloth and The Dreamer. In his songs he talks a lot about relationships which is good to hear. The album, The Dreamer and Believer hits stores Dec.20th. Thanks to S.T.E.P.S Events & Warner Bros for the invite out!

Sidenote: When we left the party our cars were parked in valet. As I got into my car, there was a book on my front seat. Me being from Cleveland, Ohio I instantly thought someone was sitting in my car reading a book to pass the time away and forgot their book, wth!!!  I got upset and it was dark out before I took a closer look and saw that it was Common’s latest book, One Day It’ll All  Make Sense, how cute to leave a lit keepsake in my car, loved that idea! I’m a mess but thanks Common! xoxo

TalkingWithTami: When did you decide you wanted to be a rapper? I was in the 8th grade. I would always crack on people and tell jokes in school. I then started writing rhymes and songs and it grew from there. In 10th grade I started going to the studio and in 11th grade I started taking it real serious.I attended Washington High School on the west end of Atlanta. At school I started getting compliments even though I loved football, but I started liking rapping more.

TalkingWithTami: You have three hit songs out. Mystery Girl,Put on Big, and Turr up. Where do you get your inspiration for your music? I get alot of my inspiration from going to the clubs, my environment, being around females. I stay in the streets to see whats going on. I get alof of inspiration from day to day people that surround me too.

TalkingWithTami: How has it been working with Moodswing Productions? It has been alot of progress so far. Now that they have created a buzz for me, people are proud of what Im doing. Moodswings is an independant label, but they do everything a major label would do anyway. Im cool with them.

TalkingWithTami: I know you have a family. How are you handling trying to maintain family life and being a rapper out on the road? Well I have lil brothers that look up to me that I cant see alot. Its very hard but I have to stay working. My folks be mad at me sometimes but im trying to get money lol.

The Last Kiss!

jadakiss 006 225x300 The Last Kiss!

Last nite I was coming from another event when my camera guy Blak(www.djblakmagic.com) suggested we stop over to Universal Music to check out Jadakiss. My camera guy loves real hip hop music to death lol. I’ve always loved Jadakiss from back in the day and Blak was surprised that I knew who he was lol.He was very nervous in asking me to go thinking that, that wouldnt be something that I would like to attend, but yes as conservative as I am, I really love rap music. Im already hyper but rap music really gets my blood going lol. So I said,”hecky yeah lets go”!

Jadakiss was having a album listening party and the Execs over at Universal put out a huge spread for the music industry, media, radio shows, producers and whoever else wanted to hear his latest album,”The Last Kiss“. The room was filled with eager listeners. Jadakiss arrived shortly after and they started playing his tracks.

Jadakiss has been M.I.A. for atleast 5 yrs with no new album because Im sure he wanted to take it slow and really concentrate on his craft. His last album was Kiss of Death which sold over 3 million copies(released in 2001). So this new albumin 2009 is picking up where that one left off. One track that I really liked was, Things that Ive been through featuring Nas. That was a head banger. I really liked that one. He has some great producers on this new album which include The Neptunes,Swizz Beatz,Eric Hudson,The Incredibles,Buckwild,Denaun Porter,Needlz,Sean C&LV, and Baby Grande.

Some other songs that I listened to were Smoke and Guns (that dealt with Sexual Abuse among females),Come and Get me,Who’s Real, and another fav of mine which is also the single,Cant Stop Me. That was produced by Neo The Matrix. Some guest appearances on Jadakiss new album were my bookie Neyo,Lil Wayne,Young Jeezy,Jasmine Sullivan,Ghostface, the L.O.X and Faith Evans who did a song called, Letter to B.I.G. which is also from the soundtrack and movie Notorious.

I wish Jadakiss many blessings & album sells and a safe tour,it was nice meeting him, he is very charming and real, check out the video footage below! I would also like to thank Calvin&Ricardo from Universal for media coverage!
