girls2 The Hip Hostess!
TalkingWithTamiYour company The Hip Hostess sounds so cute. Tell us about your business?

I started sewing and designing aprons when my daughter first married 4 years ago. After being “showered” with domestic gear she was eager to play “Hostess.” Because she is all about high fashion and high style she of course, had to have a “Hip” little apron. Hence the name: The Hip Hostess. As soon as we came up with the name, we high tailed it to the computer to get dibbs on the domain name and whew, we got it!  After much experimenting with fabrics, and designs and a lot of wishing, hoping, planning and dreaming we came up with a look that we felt would appeal to most cooks, both seasoned & novice. The aprons not only had to look fabulous, but also had to be user friendly and hold up to everyday use. I’ve always loved rick rack, and it’s been a traditional element of aprons for years. So we decided to we had to have a touch of it on the aprons, but yet have it make a bold statement. Our aprons are designed be worn over & over, not just tucked in a drawer for special occasions.

TalkingwithTami: I understand your company is ran by you and your daughter? How is it, working so closely with family?

My daughter is my biggest cheerleader, marketing rep and of course fashion consultant. Hands down, flat out she made push come to shove and get this business off the ground. I like to say I’m the “Hostess” part, and she’s the “Hip” part! Working together, and seeing our budding business blossom has been a pure joy!

TalkingWithTami: You have some very vibrant and fun patterned aprons! How do you come up with the different styles and colors?

 The Hip Hostess!

Picking out fabrics and designing is a combined effort, having the perspective of both generations is a big help. Do we always agree…of course not, we are Mother and Daughter if you mean what I mean. After a little give & take on both sides we always seem to come up with just the right thing.

TalkingWithTami: Alot of people want to start an online business. Can you give them some key advice?

As the saying goes…Do what you love & love what you do. This is absolutely so true! Don’t be afraid to transform your passion into a business. I think the key in this highly competitive economy is to stand out from the crowd. Check out the competition and do it better, make it cuter, and don’t cut corners.  I also think that excellent customer service is vital. The hardest part is taking that first step, once you do stay focused and believe in yourself. One last thing… best part of our business has been meeting and connecting with so many interesting women. I always say, “We have the sweetest customers!” We’ve also discovered that despite this dismal economy, women in business are so truly kind and supportive of each other. It’s one of the perks of being a woman in business today.

TalkingWithTami: Aprons are so trendy right now, why do you think so?

There’s no doubt that today cooking is cool and aprons are hot! I think women today are re-discovering the “Joy of Cooking” in their own kitchens. Cooking is no longer the dismal chore it used to be and women truly enjoy entertaining in their own homes and whipping up something wonderful for family and friends. Being a Hip Hostess isn’t about having the best china, or serving a gourmet meal, it’s about making your guests feel truly welcome in your home. Tying on a hip little apron is part of the fun! We like to say wearing an apron is hip whether you Make it, Bake it, or Fake it!

Me and Tarina Tarantino

I remember meeting Tarina Tarantino back in the summer time in Jacksonville,Florida at a trunk show at It’s Eclectic. I found her to be very nice and so pretty. She told me that she was launching something huge but couldn’t unveil it. She told me to stay tuned. Guess what, this week she announced that she will not only makes us sparkly, she will also make us pretty! She is launching a cosmetic line sold exclusively at Sephora’s!

That is some Pinktastic news since I love Sephora and Tarina’s custom made sparkly jewelry and now makeup! I’m a little disappointed in myself that I found  out about Tarina just this year. I heard she has been kicking butt for quite awhile. She has stores located all around the world! As you guys know my fav color is pink and someone asked me have I ever interviewed the pink haired beauty. I did some research and finally got to meet her!

Tarina had a private invite for the press in NYC and I really wish I could have flown up to see this magical experience! The press got to touch and feel her new products, and her line is set to hit Sephora’s in Feb 2010. The room was oh so, Pinktabulous with vanities, baubles and jewels…so me, I’m about to pass out lol.

The  models on the pics wearing her makeup looked gorg. I think the room decor was created by  Ruth Fischl who creates some fab parties and events. Take a look at some of the products, I cant wait to they hit Sephora stores. I will be the first in line, I’m always in there and have done many meet and greets in their stores! What a Pinktacular surprise Tarina!

TalkingWithTami: Hello Lolita! I love your Lolita glasses, they are sooo much fun! How did you come up with the idea?

6251 122113066790 84402156790 2886187 134268 n 203x300 Cheers for Lolita!

Thank you Tami! I came up with the idea on a girls’ night out in back in Memphis, Tennessee, actually. My girlfriends’ and I were at the Peabody hotel having a great time choosing martinis from a long list on the menu. We loved how each girl decided and matched her personality. It hit me then how fantastic a line of glasses would be.

TalkingWithTami: What’s a guilty pleasure of yours?

Well I have to say there’s nothing wrong with a little guilt! Makes life interesting. And I like saying that cause I love to indulge in cheese and chocolate and never want to give that up! And, wine goes with everything, without saying…

TalkingWithTami: Before you started Designs by Lolita, what was your career?

6251 121113491790 84402156790 2872263 752163 n 300x225 Cheers for Lolita!

I would say my career was always creative, which fit we perfectly. I spent years in advertising and the beauty industry making me no stranger to marketing and design. I would have to say that my best experience came from my Sales Management experience with a licensee of Donna Karan and Christian Dior Perfumes. That is where I put my marketing hat on and learned about business and how to develop a product line from start to finish. (And being a big part of launching it.) Watch out, world, for all you ladies that have an idea and some good business experience!

TalkingWithTami: Give us the skinny on what a day is like in the “Lolita world”?

7117 135124411790 84402156790 3056504 6437068 n 300x225 Cheers for Lolita!

The skinny, Tami, is that it is one fast-paced day after another– and I love it. There are my creating and designing days mixed in with my travel days. I often get to meet Lolita customers or collectors that want to be consider my biggest fans! How can I not eat that up!? I love their energy. If I’m at trade shows or signing parties I get to hear their stories, their ideas and desires for more products and it is very valuable and enriching experience for me. I also have a great husband, Michael Healy who is a designer, two teenage girls… and a horse, a dog, and 2 cats. You can imagine, it’s a very busy life!

TalkingWithTami: You have two beautiful daughters. What words do you tell them about being a Womanpreneur?

My girls are lovely, smart and imaginative. I’m so lucky. I always encourage them to work hard (luck seems to follow hard workers!) because it will really pay off. I think girls need good female role models in their lives both personally and professionally. It’s important for them to see women in successful careers. I like to tell them that it makes good sense to dream. And better sense to go after that dream. My favorite quote right now is “When others say your goal is too risky, rise above the negativity,” Claire Cooke, novelist. That has and always will be my motto, and I have brought them up believing it. One wants to be a famous chef and the other a designer, and they want to run their own businesses.
