My review:
I’m going to tell you guys right now, I never heard of the book. Maybe I was under a rock or it wasn’t readily available at my high school. My friend Tish said she had heard of it but I was ignorant to the whole thing. My friends on facebook said they played certain characters from the book in plays and I felt so out of the loop lol.
We went into the theatre and Roger Bobb and Mayor Kasim Reed welcomed all of us. Everyone cheered and applauded from their seats then the movie started.
“FOR COLORED GIRLS is written for the screen and directed by Tyler Perry, and based on the stage play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf” written by Ntozake Shange.
FOR COLORED GIRLS stars Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Michael Ealy, Kimberly Elise, Omari Hardwick, Hill Harper, Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Tessa Thompson, Kerry Washington and Whoopi Goldberg.
The movie told a tale of 9 women in America going through some very difficult, funny, sad, heartbreaks, crimes and more. It’s set in todays times. These women go through so much turmoil in their lives that happens everyday that most of us can relate to. I know it hit home to watch a few of the characters. There is hardly any dialogue in the movie and the women speak like their reciting poetry.
Kimberly Elise plays Crystal. She’s a hard working mom of two, living with her boyfriend played by Michael Ealy. When I was a young girl, my mom was married to a guy that fit Micheal Ealy’s character! It made me sad to see the outcome of their relationship and family, grab the tissues for real! Argh!
Janet Jackson plays Joanna, a stoned faced workaholic that has no compassion for others. She’s married to a very handsome guy but she got more than she bargained for with him. Major side eye!
Loretta Devine plays Juanita. She gave the film a breath of fresh air and was funny. She dates Frank and he’s a mess, that keeps coming in and out of her life. It’s hard for her to let him go.
Thandie Newton plays Tangie who got on my last nerves. She uses her body and beauty to lure men and then uses them and disposes of them like garbage. She’s very mean spirited and cares about only her and her needs.
Phylicia Rashad plays Gilda the nosey neighbor and manager of the apartment building where some of the other ladies live. She’s a loving and caring neighbor but can be a bit intrusive at times.
Anika Noni Rose plays Yasmine a beautiful dancer with big dreams. My heart went out to her. She had no idea that the world could be so cruel. She’s the girl that just wants to be a princess and find her prince. Her dreams are shattered for sure after her date from hell! He got what was coming to him!
Whoopi Goldberg plays Alice a very delusional character who’s a religious nut. She’s a hoarder with mental issues as well. She has two daughters that she loves but treats differently.
There are more characters in the movie I just touched on a few. The movie goes in and out of these ladies lives while you feel for them with the struggles that they face. We as black women go through so much be it with no good men, raising kids alone, being lonely, and heart aches. I don’t know why with each generation,we seem to repeat that vicious cycle.I saw my mom get beat and mistreated and when I got older what did I do? I dated a guy exactly like my mom did. I quickly learned that wasn’t normal but it does happen.
We are a strong race of women that America portrays daily as loose, quick tongue and sassy. We are more than that and this film makes you think about you, your family and how we as women can rise above all the negativity and become better! I think this movie was very well done and I suggest you take your girlfriends and significant others to see it. Don’t be surprised to see violent acts, nudity and foul language. I wouldn’t take kids. If I had to rate this film I would be give it a B+. I would like to thank the staff over at Tyler Perry Studios and Jonell Pr for the personal invite, I enjoyed the movie.
