www.whatnowatlanta.com

Founder: Caleb J. Spivak

Site Personality: Breaking news on openings and closings in Atlanta restaurants and retail without the relentless cheerleading.

Since:
2010

Why did you choose this subject?

I saw the opportunity for reporting what was happening with Atlanta’s businesses, something the market craved but required resources that were dropped by traditional media. Our approach to the information is utter honesty. There is an overwhelming number of flowery, optimistic blog and review sites here in Atlanta and it’s naïve to think that all news is good news. There are many businesses and restaurants here in Atlanta that deserve our praise, but many that need to be called out in hopes of making them a better establishment for the consumer.

Is the site profitable?

It’s almost next to impossible to make money from blogging… With What Now Atlanta, our business model is a little different than traditional online advertising but I’m not at liberty to discuss what that is. Let’s just say, there are some big things in the works for 2011.

Can you give advice to new bloggers wishing to generate income from their blogs?

Check out www.AtlantaBloggingWorkshops.com. I took the class before I launched, and well, the numbers speak for themselves.

How do readers respond to you?

Many of our readers are Atlantan’s who want to be in-the-know and are extremely passionate about the information and news we break… Comments left have been so controversial they’ve even been published in various publications including Project Q.

How do you link to other bloggers and get the word out to others that you have a blog?

Luckily, the news I report is covered by all of the popular media outlets in Atlanta. Almost everyday, we get coverage in Creative Loafing, the Atlanta Journal Constitution and Atlanta Magazine. But it didn’t just happen for us. We had to establish ourselves as a credible news source and keep the content coming on a regular basis.

What role do Twitter and Facebook play in the success of your blog?

Twitter and Facebook pay the bills. Seriously. What most people don’t realize is that building an online presence through Social Media requires a robust strategy and can have a huge effect on business. Consider this: Facebook and Twitter combined are the second largest traffic driver to What Now Atlanta. And that’s why Huffington Post blogger Mike Alvear and I teach Twitter for Small Business at Atlanta’s only Twitter Workshop (www.WhatNowAtlanta.com/Twitter).

Do you consider yourself a journalist?

What Now Atlanta isn’t your normal “blog.” Some refer to WNA as an “online publication.” It’s a news site so investigative journalism is necessary to get our information, but in the professional sense, I am not a journalist and I’ve never looked at myself as a writer. I am an entrepreneur who gets a kick out of writing.

THESHOT 1024x682 Lifestyle Bloggers you need to know: Veronica Unleashed

Another series of Lifestyle Bloggers you need to know from Rolling Out.

Site: Veronica UnLeashed

Founder: Veronica Pearman

Since: 2010

Site Personality: A positive platform where I talk about what I’ve learned, and what I cherish about being a sexual woman.

Why is your site important?

It’s about growing [as] a woman. Veronica UnLeashed is my point of view and my experience [with my] sexuality, being a woman and enjoying life with or without a partner.

Is it profitable?

I actually just got my first check for reviewing a software package developed for women. That opportunity came out of the blue! I responded to a post made by a PR firm, and before I knew it, I was sent the software package to try. I am just now learning that there may be opportunities for financial return even though it was not my motivation to start blogging, but it has certainly been a nice perk.

Describe your relationship with your readers?

I get many [notes] via e-mail: “Thank you,” “Wish you were my Mom,” “Wow! I didn’t know that,” “Will you marry me?” “Who do you think you are?” and “You helped me talk to my girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband” from both men and women equally.

How do you link to other bloggers and get the word out to others that you have a blog? Is connecting to other bloggers important?

Oh gosh, yes. I have a blog roll that I try to maintain. It’s pretty hard because I’m constantly adding new bloggers to my read list.  I like to read what others are saying.

What role does Twitter play in your life? Facebook? LinkedIn? the social utility for me.  I try to share my life in pictures, and my comments for anyone who may be interested.  I’ve met a load of great people and it makes it easy for readers to send e-mails privately.  LinkedIn — I’m listed. [I'm] also trying to get the hang of … FourSquare. I call FourSquare the official “Stalker Enabler!”  Ha … gotta love it!

What other social media do you utilize?

MeetUp I use in conjunction with a nonprofit where I sit on the board.  It’s been amazing the people that have found us and that are interested in the charity work that we do and then in turn, they become readers of my blog! Too cool!

Do you consider yourself a journalist?

No, I consider myself a journal writer.

What do you do when you are not blogging?

I am a movie addict and a big book reader. My 16-year-old daughter and I spend a lot of time at Blockbuster and Borders. I am heavily involved in a lot of charity work internationally in my home, [the] Dominican Republic and locally here in Atlanta.

Some of your favorite bloggers are …

I love Talking with Tami. I also love Arielle Loren. I really have so many favorites. It’s hard to pick. Go look on my blog roll.
