Nikki Walker

TalkingWithTami:  Nikki your a fab publicist! Can you tell me what a day is like for you in your career?

The great thing about my days are that they vary. Generally I’m up at 8. I check blogs, look at overnight emails and say a silent prayer at my desk. By 9 I am engrossed in phone calls with clients and my Sr. team member Shem Young. She and I discuss the day’s needs and delegate who will handle them. By 10 its all about writing press releases and proposals. I try to talk with media and do in person meetings from noon until 4 and usually work until about 7 via blackberry. I must adnit that once in a while I do a noon “meeting” with Maury! Can’t get enough of the DNA shows! lol!

TalkingWithTami: What was your first job in pr?

nikki4 187x300 Pr Diva Nikki Walker!

My first real job in PR was with Double XXposure. When I decided to become a publicist I sought out a master to teach me. Angelo Ellerbee is the “Berry Gordy” of my generation in terms of grooming artists for the spotlight. I worked directly with him, we even shared an office. There I was exposed to artists like Mary J. Blige, DMX, Morgan Heritage and Ginuwine along with up and coming artists. It was an amazing experience that put me right in the center of the NY music scene at the time. It definitely snatched the “star-struck” mentality right out of me.

TalkingWithTami:  What would be the ideal client for you? Has been or newbies would you take either on?

nikk1 237x300 Pr Diva Nikki Walker!

My ideal client is properly funded and well versed on their industry and where their business fits in the schematic. It takes money to make money and not everyone understands that. Simply hiring a PR firm is not the end of the journey. Clients who are ready to make an investment in their company are the ones who flourish. I would love to take on a couture designer next. I’ve done mass market and I love it, but the luxury market is so different and I’d love to join that club! Newbies have great energy and are fun to pitch. Has beens are a great challenge because we get to make them relevant once more. They are usually humble and ready for any challenge since they have a little seasoning on them.

TalkingWithTami: On the red carpets what are some key media outlets you look for to give your clients exposure and why is that important?

nikki2 300x225 Pr Diva Nikki Walker!

Red carpets are a monster! With regional events it is so important to get the wire services and the local glossies like Jezebel, Uptown and the Atlantan. I LOVE the blog community. The writers, reporters and photographers are so professional and so important to the client because they offer instant coverage and recognition. I appreciate their support.

TalkingWithTami:  Congrats on tying the knot! How are you juggling your career and family life now?

nikk 300x200 Pr Diva Nikki Walker!

My new life as a wife has been amazing! My husband is the love of my life and our little home is my sanctuary. Both he and my son are my biggest cheerleaders. They make sure I eat, take my vitamins and always listen to my drama (yes, there is drama in owning a business!) Two angels, I swear. When the door to my home office is closed they leave me alone and when I appear tired, frustrated and burned out, they are there with hugs, kisses (and often a cocktail!) lol! Mr. Owens makes the journey a lot easier and I love him for it!

I got a chance to meet a Pinktabulous woman in business, which was Lisa Price! I’ve been following her career for awhile now and she said,”Tami its been 14yrs”! She was very pleasant and told me it was alot of work starting out, but well worth it. Lisa told me she was from Brooklyn Ny. I asked her what was her fav product and she said, she loves the Hair Milk because it doesnt leave your hair sticky and that its her best selling item. I asked her how she liked our  humid weather here in Atlanta and she said it was very hot, lol.

It was a packed affair. I also got a chance to congratulate Steve Harvey on his new book,”Act like a lady,Think like a Man“.

He looked very serious when I approached him with my mic. I introduced myself to him and then said,” hey Steve I’m from Cleveland”. I use to do your ex wife nails(the mother of his two twins) lol, he looked a lil uncomfortable but smiled and let me proceed with my interview. He also told me he was a resident of Atlanta, I was like wow,Ive never seen him around town but I have seen his new wife out. I loved her platinum ring and quickly zoomed in to get a pic of that puppy. I also liked how they complimented each other with their coordinating outfits, they looked very stylish man. I do believe his book is doing extremely well too! If Im not mistaken, I think I overheard someone saying a movie is in the works of his Bestselling book, wow, you go Steve! She said, she has a new talk show coming out that will air on B.E.T. titled, “The Monique Show”. Tonite Monique was casual, with a nice healthy looking hairdo,a pair of blue jean capris and nice top with gucci heels, she was very funny and real, you can tell she was very relaxed, I like her,go girl! She said the tapings will be done at Turner Broadcasting studios and that the show starts taping Sept 1st. I’m going to try to make it to atleast one of those tapings! Good luck with your new show Monique! You can tell she likes people alot like me because she posed for pics and chatted with everyone, making it nice to be around her.

lacatorheadshot 199x300 Catch a Fever with Natischa Harvey!

Natischa Harvey owner of Fever shoe line

TalkingWithTami:  How did you come up with the name Fever for your shoe line? I wanted to name my shoe line Fetish first because when I was in high school, I would wear high heels on tuesdays and thursdays and on monday, wednesday and fridays, I would wear sneakers. I was a basketball player at Mt.Zion in Jonesboro,Ga and my friends would tease me about my different styles of shoes lol. I then started liking the name Fever because with a name like that, you have to pay attention!  A fever is something you have to get  down and pay close attention to. I thought to myself, yes I like that, so I named my shoe line Fever!

TalkingwithTami: As a young women in business, how has it been owning your own shoe company?  Wow, it has tought me alot! I worked at shoe stores in the past. I also owned a shoe store called fever for four years. I learned first about price points, finding a manufacturer, which is the hardest thing to do ever. I had to do alot of research and have a buyers perspective. It was very challenging. My mom told me to focus on college first, I attended Clark Atlanta University and I majored in Political Science. Mom said always have something to fall back on and do the shoe business on the side or as a hobby. I was the one passionate about shoes, so I decided to launch Fever shoes in 2009.

TalkingWithTami: Who did you admire as a young girl? My mom first, she was a single parent and she taught me so much. I admire Tyler Perry,Oprah,Kimora Simmons because she showed the world she could be a mom and business woman. I also admired alot of people around me. I would listen to their stories, you just never know what someone has been through. I definately respect alot of people who had to pay their dues to be where they are today.

TalkingWithTami: Tell us some of your fav shoes you have designed? Ooh ok, 1st I love the Wendy’s! They are the leopard ones and are my absolute favorites. They stand alone! That shoe really pops! The 2nd ones I love are the  Aniyah’s. The tennis shoe is named after my daughter and she designed it! 3rd I like the Spring one. Its vibrant and full of color. Its wild and trendy and has extra comfort.

TalkingWithTami: If you could have any spokesmodel to wear your shoes who would it be and why? I would have to say Rhianna. She would be a great spokesmodel for Fever! People look at her for fashion! She is definately a trendsetter to me!
