Funny-man Mike Epps covers this weeks Rolling Out looking rather comfortable and chilled out! Shot by Dewayne Rodgers and interviewed by Amir Shaw. I heard on set he made everyone laugh, sorry I missed this one! In his interview he chats about his stand up tour, how he stays funny and more! Here are a few excerpts from the interview but to read it all please click here.

You’re about to hit the road again. What does it take to prepare for a stand-up tour?
I’m always working throughout the entire year. I’m … working on my next show or my next tour. Before I hit the road, I go to comedy clubs, improvs and do multiple shows. I work on my act, my timing and I make sure all of my jokes are in place.

Why will this be your best stand-up concert thus far?
This is my third stand-up installment. I think I’m more seasoned. I’ve been working on jokes for many, many years. My subject matter, my story, my punch lines and my delivery [are] all better. I’ve been doing it for so long now, it’s time to really show everybody what I’ve been working on for many, many years.

Let’s go back for a minute. At what moment did you realize that you could be successful at stand-up comedy?

Aw man, you know it started back in 1954 … [people were] like man “how old is this Benjamin Button looking motha?” I’m just kidding … it was 1994. I went on “Def Comedy Jam” and had a great set. When I hit the “Def Comedy Jam” scene, it was off the chain. But that was my golden year when things first kicked off.

The T: Mechelle Epps(Mike Epps Wife) Ready To Get Her Shine

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

I just got word that Mechelle Epps (who is married to Mike Epps), is ready to hit the spotlight. In an exclusive interview with Rolling Out Magazine she talks about getting the acting bug, movies she’s appeared in and more. I met her at the BET Hip Hop Awards a few months back and I snapped this photo of her. She is very pretty and I liked her outfit. In Hollywood though, pretty faces are a dime a dozen, I wish her well! I’m sure with her hubby being a great comedian and none for being on the big screen, he can possibly open some doors for her. Here is the excerpt from the interview. Morning to all! xoxo

What is your background?

Producer and actress. I moved to L.A. from Houston to become an actress. My mom and I drove a U-haul truck.

So you had a mom-ager?

Not quite. She gave me great support though.

When you hear the title “Mike’s wife” is that offensive?

Sometimes. I prefer for people to know I’m Mechelle, a person.

What films have you been in?

I was in the Fighting Temptations and a few other independent films with Nicole Ari Parker, Mike [Epps], Wendy Raquel Robinson and others. I’ve played a drunk and a “gangsta girl.”

What frame of reference did you use for that role?

Set it Off! I channeled Queen Latifah.

How long ago was this?

A year and a half ago. It was seen in small theaters.

What other roles do you see yourself playing?

Roles that are catered to women. I like the path that Halle Berry has taken and the diverse roles she has played. Those types of roles, like Losing Isaiah and The Dorothy Dandridge Story, are compelling to me.

Do your prefer love stories, drama or comedy?

I think my strongest attribute is comedy. I like to see people smile.

What are you doing to make yourself stand out since there are only so many roles available to black women?

Well, I plan to do different things. I’m producing and being proactive in Hollywood. It’s not about what’s available, it’s about being creative and being different.

How do you feel about black films period?

I think we are in a “reality” and “being famous” generation. So, the producers are giving you what people respond to. For instance, Beyoncé, her fans will come see her in a movie.

As you make your way as an actress, do you feel your relationship will suffer?

Well, speaking of Beyoncé, I like her and Jay’s approach. Just don’t talk about it. Keep it private and don’t make it the media’s main focus.

epps bet1 BET Hip Hop Awards Black Carpet & Show Recap

On a brisk, sunny Oct. 1 afternoon, I made my way down to the Atlantic Civic Center for the BET Hip Hop Awards. I’ve been covering this award show for years now. As conservative as I am, this show has been lots of fun for me because hey, I was a teen in the 80′s, so rap music is part my blood.

The black carpet was filled with lots of new and old rappers, winners, performers, honorees, presenters, managers, promoters, label execs and more. On the carpet I spotted; Tyrese,Wale, Mike Epps and his wife, Amare Stoudemire, LL Cool J and his wife Simone, Nelly, Wiz Khalifa, Wale, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Roscoe Dash, Tracee Ellis Ross looking sparkly (and in a better mood), Da Brat, El Debarge and his daughter Bobbie, Twista, Ace Hood, Busta Rhymes and a host of others.

I didn’t see too many ladies walk the carpet at all just Da Brat, Tracee Ellis Ross and Diamond. You know it was hip hop so not too many people dressed up for the occasion and I saw enough sagging jeans for a life time. I did see a lot of fashionable jewelry on the carpet and Nelly and Shawty Lo sported some nice pieces. One of my crushes did hit the carpet dressed nice and that was Ricky Rozay! He wore a grey silk shirt, grey jeans and Fendi kicks and designer frames. He came over to give me some suga, I almost fainted! The carpet was pretty short and sweet, then I made my way to my seat for the show.

Inside they were taping for the show to air next week, so everyone rushed to be seated. The show opened with Jeezy coming out and I almost didn’t recognize him! He has trimmed down a lot. After a few bars, T.I. appeared and everyone jumped to their feet. He wore a grey jogging suit with Gucci accessories. They made the crowd go bananas and it was by far the best performance of the night!

Mike Epps then came to the stage and welcomed the crowd wearing a black velvet tuxedo with a red rose boutonniere. He looked very nice and had plenty of jokes. Nextwas the award for Best Featured Verse which was presented by Dj Khaled. That went to Busta Rhymes for his part on Chris Brown’s song, “Look at Me Now.” Busta hit the stage and thanked everyone and said, “It feels good when you hear cheers for your win.”

In between sets, they showed cyphers of rappers across the country spitting lyrics and everyone in the crowd cheered for their favorite artists. I personally liked Joe Buttens rap style, Blind Fury and Eminem.

Wiz Khalifa hit the stage wearing an outrageous outfit, I was dying with laughter,  but the crowd didn’t pay that any mind! He performed ‘Taylor Gang” the crowd loved it! Malcolm Jamal Warner and Tracee Ellis Ross presented the award for Best Collaboration and that went to Chris Brown, Busta Rhyme and Lil Wayne for “Look At Me Now.”

After that, El Debarge came out singing, then Meek and Ricky Rozay followed suit. The crowd was back up on their feet. Ross finished with performing “Imma Boss.” A shocker for the night was when you heard someone growling but couldn’t see him. It was no other than DMX! He looked fab and did a great job,the crowd loved him! Swizz Beatz acted as  DMX’s hype man, as he performed a few ofhis greatest hits.

The People’s Champ Award went to Chris Brown for “Look at Me Now.” Busta accepted all awards for him since Brown is on tour. After that, Too Short  introduced Lupe Fiasco who performed with Erykah Badu. Big Sean then made a grand entrance with his side kick Roscoe Dash singing, “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay.” Nelly then welcomed to the stage, LL Cool J to receive his award for I Am Hip Hop.We watched a clip of his career over the years, then LL Cool J came to the podium and thanked his wife, family, God and more.

Best Club Banger went to Waka Flocka for, No Hands. He wasn’t present to accept the award. A slimmer Heavy D then closed the show doing his dance moves that we all love. It was a fun show to watch with lots of great set designs, effects, flashy lighting, explosions on stage and more!  I would like to thank BET Staff for allowing me to cover and for the great seat inside! The show airs Oct 11 on BET at 8pm est. Enjoy the pics! xoxo
