Last night I attended a town hall meeting in the city of Atlanta at City Hall where they discussed the importance of HBCU’s(Historical Black Colleges). I never attended a black college because not too many people in my family attended any. I was the first to graduate from College but I was in Ohio so I attended Kent State University.
Tv Personality Mark Hayes from Good Day Atlanta
If I could do it again, I would have definitely ventured out to see the world and get that one on one experience at a black college instead of a huge university where you’re just a number.
Mayor Kasim Reed
At City Hall Tv Personality Mark Hayes was the mediator and he’s an alumni of Howard University. Mayor Kasim Reed sat next to me at the meeting and whispered that he was a double grad from Howard University. My boss Mr.Munson Steed is a proud graduate of Morehouse and he was also on the panel to discuss his views on the subject. Other guests on the panel included:
Dr. Miriam Shropshire
- Dr. Miriam Shropshire
- Sabrina Davis
- Hardy Dorsey
- Zeron Turlington
- Munson Steed
- Nancy Flake Johnson
- Tharon Johnson
During the discussion Mark asked the panelists what going to a black university meant to them. Most said it was because of their parents going or a relative that they knew who attended. Dr. Miriam Shropshire parents said it was not an option to attend a black college lol. The panelists also talked about how college prepared them for the jobs they have now, perceptions of black schools and more. It was a great discussion and I certainly learned a lot. My daughter is 13 and she wants to attend Spelman College. I am trying my hardest to save every penny because with the high cost of higher education Im going to need a miracle by the time she graduates.
