I’m a fan of rapper Common’s music. He is definitely respected in the music industry with his witty and conscious lyrics that he puts out. I was invited out to a private listening party for Commons upcoming album, The Dreamer, The Believer last night at Jermaine Dupri’s studio in Atlanta. I never been to that studio but it was very nicely decorated. As we pulled up, fly cars were parked out front and all sorts of celebs were making their way inside.

In the party I spotted Keri Hilson, Towanda Braxton, Bu(Akon’s Brother) Neyo and his fiance Monyetta Shaw, J Holiday, Young Jeezy and a host of other record execs and industry people. It was jammed pack and I’m sure it was over capacity but everyone was excited to hear Commons latest project. The man of the hour finally arrived, very hyped up and in a good mood. He thanked everyone for coming out and said, follow him to the studio! We gathered around then he started to talk about his inspiration for the new album. He said, “I’m a hip hop n*gga and there is different sides to me. When you listen to my album, I want you to be motivated and inspired, thats my ultimate goal.” He then started blasting off the new tracks for us to hear.

Here are the songs he played in order:

  • Raw~ about going to a club
  • Sweet~ this song has a newly released video that came out today. Its about hip hop music. The video pays homage to Haiti and thats where it was filmed.
  • Cloth~ two people cut from the same cloth, nice!
  • Celebrate~Very upbeat, sure to get a lot of airplay
  • The Dreamer~deep song about feelings, Maya Angelou featured on track
  • Ghetto Dreams~hard core about him and a girl having dreams of getting out the hood.
  • Gold~headbanger great song
  • Believer~up temple nice song

After we listened to all the songs, he thanked us for coming out. He then did a little freestyle for us and the crowd loved it. The whole cd was produced by No I.D. and my favs were Cloth and The Dreamer. In his songs he talks a lot about relationships which is good to hear. The album, The Dreamer and Believer hits stores Dec.20th. Thanks to S.T.E.P.S Events & Warner Bros for the invite out!

Sidenote: When we left the party our cars were parked in valet. As I got into my car, there was a book on my front seat. Me being from Cleveland, Ohio I instantly thought someone was sitting in my car reading a book to pass the time away and forgot their book, wth!!!  I got upset and it was dark out before I took a closer look and saw that it was Common’s latest book, One Day It’ll All  Make Sense, how cute to leave a lit keepsake in my car, loved that idea! I’m a mess but thanks Common! xoxo

I know the ladies are smiling, I know I am! The very handsome Common covers this weeks issue of Rolling Out looking fresh to death. I like his style and the way he carries himself. I met him a few years ago here in Atlanta and he was such the gentleman!

In the interview for RO he discusses being fearless, family, being conscious of his lyrics and new album and more! To read the full article click here. Great job on both ends!

And he’s fearless.

“To a certain extent, a lot of [things in the book] are things that happened in my life,” he says. “I’m not ashamed of the things that have happened in my life. I’m not ashamed that I was scared at one point. I’m not ashamed that I was heartbroken at one point. I’m not ashamed that I was fighting at one point, because those are the things that I went through and experienced, and that’s what life is about. You gotta go through those experiences.”

Common rapped in high school but dissolved the group when he attended Florida A&M to study business administration. While there, he earned money as an emcee. During his sophomore year, The Source featured his lyrics in October 1991 as “Unsigned Hype.” That mention led to a record deal from Relativity, on their core-metal label, Combat.
