I was invited out to a press screening to see the most talked about movie of the summer called, The Help. I saw the movie trailer a few months back and could not wait to see this film! I cancelled all other media events and my daughter and I headed to the theatre. I met some of my other friends at the movies who were very intrigued by the film as well.
I didn’t know what to expect. I knew it was about black women being maids in the south but that was pretty much it. I did not read the book in advance because by me running around town, its hard for me to sit still and read a book lol. From hearing all the chatter in the theatre with the other ladies, they said the book was really good. I have my media copy on the way.
The movie started and we got right into it. It’s set in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960′s. The first person I thought about was my Granny NuNu who was born in Atlanta,Ga. She also was a maid but back then they called it “day work”. The characters in the movie reminded me of my grandmother so much. Its a tale about Skeeter(Emma Stone) living in the south. She’s a very youthful, charismatic writer who dreams of one day working for a big publishing company in NYC. She was raised by a black maid Constantine played by Cicely Tyson. If Cicely didn’t look just like my granny wow, it brought back so many memories. In the movie, Aibeleen(Viola Davis) & Minny(Octavia Spencer) are best buddies who are both maids who see and hear many things that go on while working for their white bosses in their homes. All three women come together when Skeeter decides to do a writing project that shakes up their rural town. At those times women were seen and not heard plus african americans did not mix with any other race, let alone sit and write books together.
The film had joy, sadness, empowerment, laughter and more. I left the movie cheering for Aibeleen because to me, she was a true hero. When we made our way to the lobby, many said I reminded them of Minny because of my sassiness and not being afraid to speak up. I don’t think I had nothing on that feisty Minny character but if the shoe fits lol. The song by Mary J Blige, “The Living Proof ” is really touching to hear in the movie too.Take your tissues, your girlfriends, sisters, aunties, daughters to see this movie, its a must see for sure! I give this film an A+. I would like to thank Allied Pr/Mktg for the invitation. The movie hits theaters today!
