Betsey Johnson is a breast cancer survivor and she recently created 3 unique Barbie hats for the Kentucky Derby to raise awareness. The over the top adorable hats will be unveiled at the 107th Kentucky Derby on May 6 and 7th. Johnson is said be attending the Derby for the first time. She will also support Chambord’s breast cancer efforts through the brands “Pink Your Drink” program.
Chambord plans to have activities at the Derby including the Kentucky Oaks Fashion Contest, which Betsey Johnson will judge. The Barbie Hat will be auctioned at a brunch at Gilda’s Club while the Rose Hat will be auctioned April 26 to May 7th at BiddingforGood.com. The Cleopatra meets Scarlet Hat will be shown at a contest on Chambord Facebook page. Proceeds from two of the hats will benefit the National Breast Cancer Coalition and Gildas Club of Louisville.
“I wanted to do over-the-top hats, and when you think of it, the Kentucky Derby is one big fashion show,” said Johnson. “I’ve designed three hats — the Barbie Hat, which I adore and is so much fun; the Rose Hat, which also has whimsical looking spiders and bugs, and the Cleopatra-meets-Scarlett Hat, which has a pink wig. A hat maker in Brooklyn made me a huge pink straw hat and it’s encrusted allover with pink roses and fake diamonds.”
