Sid Powell
TalkingWithTami: Hello Sid tell us how you got into writing plays?
I originally joined the writing arena when I co-authored and published three novels, The Key Party, She’s Just A Friend, and The Makeup of a Woman. Two of these novels are currently published by best-selling author, Carl Weber. After experiencing great success with writing books but disappointment with the business side of things I took several years away from all of it and refused to write. One day I woke up and was ready but decided I wanted to write my first script instead of another novel. Pass It Down was born and birthed.
TalkingWithTami: When you are creating your characters, tell us how you develop them?
Pass It Down is largely about experiences that I have NEVER had. I was not lucky enough to grow up with a grandmother’s influence and so I always longed for that connection. I decided if I couldn’t have it in real life, I would create my vision of how it would have been for me. All of my characters are parts of me, even the male characters. This has been a technique I stumbled upon since I began writing novels. I find that it allows me to connect to every character no matter their age, color, or gender.
TalkingWithTami: You have a new play coming out, Pass it Down, tell us about it?
Pass It Down is the story of Marlene Bishop and the three generations of women under her, her daughter Lenny, her granddaughter Ruby, and her greatgranddaughter Liz. After Harold Carter III passes away leaving Lenny a widow, Marlene steps in to help the family heal, but in her own way. This group of women comes to terms with secrets that have plagued them all their lives, and that’s when the healing actually begins. And that’s how it is in life. You can’t begin to heal until you are honest with yourself.
TalkingWithTami: Who is one of your characters in the play, that has a very special place in your heart?
I would have to say the great grandmother, Marlene. She is what I envision my own grandmother to have been like. The influence of a grandmother is priceless and I wish I’d had it first hand. I still get to know my grandmother through my mother but Pass It Down gave me the opportunity to experience moments I never had.
TalkingWithTami: When your not writing plays, tell us a happy place you like to visit?
I assume you mean a physical happy place but if not I can share insight on both. When I’m not writing I’m still thinking of stories that I plan to write. I enjoy spending time alone a lot. I like to eat alone, go to the movies alone, and drive with the radio off at times. It gives me the chance to hear myself and as crazy as this may sound to some, it’s when I hear God talking to me. Sometimes the sounds of life can hinder your development. I take every opportunity I can to stop talking and to listen. In terms of physical happy places I enjoy spending time in Bermuda with my second family and in Los Angeles.
