Elizar Mytka owner of Huggalugs
TalkingWithTami: You have the cutest kid product, I luv it! Tell us what made you start Huggalugs?
I came up with the idea for Huggalugs while searching for leg warmers to fit my daughter then aged 19 months. I had been given a vintage pair of the coolest Mohair 70’s warmers but when I looked at finding some for Audrey, what was on the market just wasn’t suitable for my little girl. I did this while studying Financial Services to change career paths to something to more flexible yet still with a stable income while raising my daughter – fine arts and mural painting is great and I still paint to relax but it’s quite a task to gain a stable income from that. My flagship range of “Leghuggers”, were made especially to fit Audrey’s chubby thighs (she had the cutest Footballer thighs!) and after I sourced a local factory to create a product suitable for my toilet training, skirt obsessed daughter as well as a variety of boys and girls, babies to big kids arms and legs, I set about taking my product to a global market.
TalkingwithTami: You live in Australia, what kinda of styles are trendy for the youth over there? As we live quite near the coast, you see a big ‘surfer/skater’ influence on children’s fashion, especially for my little boy Banjo who has turned 1 recently. Dancing also adds an edge to nearly every item in my daughters wardrobe. I feel so blessed we can add a bit of Huggalugs style to their outfits.
TalkingWithTami: Being a mom is tough sometimes, tell us what you do with your family to unwhind, and get away from running your company? Getting out and enjoying nature is always a great way to relax away from work. We have a local National Park reserve here where you can go and pat Koala’s and feed Emu’s-that’s always a big hit with the kids.
TalkingWithTami: You have lots of different style/colors for Huggalugs, Tell us how you wear them or see your customers use them? Coming from a Fine Arts background originally, I love to see our Huggalugs used as a composition piece to an outfit either layered with other pieces of clothing on Banjo’s legs – He is in diapers and its freezing here so we are using them all the time, or as a fashion piece – Audrey is still skirt obsessed so the new Legruffles range keep her legs cozy with dancer flair while she has on her favourite denim mini dress. I wear our Legruffles under skinny jeans with a pair of heels for just a peak of frill layer and a bit of colour.
TalkingWithTami: I want to come to Australia! Where is one place I can catch Elizar hanging out?
You will find me hanging out at Newcastle’s Canoe beachside pool in summer with the kid’s and while in Sydney, Bondi’s Gusto cafe is a top place to hang out and grab a caffeine fix.
